OIL & GAS DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LTD. (OGDCL) - Islamabad

Before OGDCL's formation, exploration activities in Pakistan were conducted by Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. (PPL) and Pakistan Oilfields Ltd. (POL). In 1952, PPL discovered a large gas field in Balochistan's Sui area. This prompted five major foreign oil companies to enter into concession agreements with the government and carry out extensive geological and geophysical surveys, as well as drill 47 exploratory wells. Through these explorations, a few small gas fields were uncovered. Despite these discoveries, exploration activity peaked in the mid-1950s and started to decline in the late 1950s. Private companies, whose main goal was to make a profit, were not interested in developing the gas fields, especially when infrastructure and demand for gas was lacking.
